Description

Poster shows caricature of Abraham Kuyper looking up while on his knees praying next to a cannon marked "De Standaard" shooting fireworks into the sky. Above him lying across a blimp is a caricature of Theodor Heemskerk dropping a brochure from the sky. On a column on the left side of the picture is posted a sign which reads "Het torentje van binnenlandische zaken 1917" [The turret of interior affairs in 1917]. Additional caption title reads: "Brochure-bommen en gordijn van diestarren-granaten" [Brochure bombs and a curtain of twinkling three star grenades]. Abraham Kuyper, minister of the Dutch Reformed Church and prime minister of the Netherlands from 1901-1905 was also the editor of the conservative anti-revolutionary newspaper "De Standaard" [The Standard]. Editorial comments by Kuyper in the newspaper were designated by three stars. Theodore Heemskerk, also a member of the anti-revolutionary party, served as the Netherlands prime minister from 1908-1913.
