Description

A very fine late 17th century hunting hanger of the type favoured by British naval officers of the time. Slightly curved fullered blade faintly etched with foliage etc ,blade exhibits usual wear & minor light stains, brass mounted stag horn grip with slight damage to pommel. Nicely embossed shell guard. the brass guard is showing usual wear.
More information to come, this sword has quite a story of it being the property of a fairly famous Naval officer which i want to try & establish if its true & correct , as with many of these famous stories we hear most usually turn out to be misguided & incorrect.
The story attached to this sword is its "supposed" to have belonged to Admiral Benbow, it was in the possession of a long time collector who sadly passed away & the original tag stated that this was HIS sword & that it is the sword that Benbow is holding in a portrait in the book written about him, (the previous owner bought many items from the UK i believe so who knows) The book is included with the sword, Yes it could well be his sword as per the portrait but it could also be just another late 1600s hunting hanger, i will never know for sure but when time permits i will do some more research
