Just back from P[olisher in Japan,blade in shirasaya with sayagaki.
Superb quality Japanese Samurai tanto from Shinto period the koshirae on this sword is awesome, Blade is currently in Japan for polish . the sword actually has an old Kantei opinion paper with it done by Mr George E Welch of Springfield Ohio many years ago & he obviously knew his field as it appears to correct in ever way. ( it also has a 20k value on the back in pencil) Not sure if this was the owners value or Mr Welch put it there.) but I believe its not worth near that money .The price is $10,000 plus postage

The blade is nice & healthy, no flaws anywhere to be seen, nice hamon both sides of the blade with some awesome work in the entire blade, The koshirae is beautiful, everything is done with Cherry Blosoms, the fuchi appears to be the only mismatched item. the gold work on the handle appears to be Higo school & is still in very nice condition with only minimal loss to gold inlay, all the other fittings bar the Elephant head has Cherry blossoms including the saya end cap done in silver & gold gold high relief, the scabbard has a large gold lacquered Cherry tree which extends both sides of the saya. Kozuka handle has gold Cherry blossom & has makers Kao in gold, the kozuka blade has a lovely mei (signature) but has not been translated.
The menuki are large Kirri blossoms & are thick heavy solid gold. Kurikata is a large gold relief Elephant head which has superb detail right down to its eyes.
This is a lovely set of koshira & of excellent quality.
